When the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) enacted new measures restricting the contents of carry-on luggage, it was confusing for travelers and a nightmare for airline workers who had to enforce the new restrictions. It was also an opportunity for PactivCorporation, the manufacturer of Hefty® brand products.

Working with Marketing Alternatives, Pactiv’s developed a solution to eliminate some of the confusion for travelers: conveniently packaged quart-size plastic zip top bags that meet the TSA’s new requirements for containing liquid, gel or aerosol products. The TSA-approved imprinted bags are now sold by major retailers nationwide.

Marketing Alternatives role in the project began with overseeing the printing of the pillow pack chipboard boxes for the product. The company then took on the task of assembling the packaging, which includes picking and packing seven bags per pillow pack and the finish gluing required to close the package. Marketing Alternatives then coordinates shipping according to Pactiv’s direction.

“By partnering with Marketing Alternatives, Pactiv’s new pillow pack travel bags were on store shelves within six weeks,” comments Bob Nuzzo, executive vice president. “That’s one third the usual lead time for a project like this.”

With the exception of the printing, all of the assembly and shipping is coordinated through Marketing Alternatives’ Crystal Lake fulfillment center. All of the materials used – including the glue – are FDA approved and meet Pactiv’s strict quality control standards.
